From Pilot Testing to Plant Realization Dry Grinding Plant for SCM Production

cyment, a European pioneer in sustainable binder technology, focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of concrete while maintaining strict technical performance specifications. The company operates across multiple European markets with applications in construction projects.

To support growing demand for supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), cyment partnered with CEMTEC to realize a complete dry grinding plant in Hungary. The objective was to create a flexible and energy-efficient solution capable of processing different SCM materials while maintaining constant product quality.

A key challenge of the project was the varying material behavior of pozzolanic and latent hydraulic materials. Extensive laboratory and pilot scale testing formed the basis for the final plant design and enabled the development of a reliable grinding process tailored to the customer’s requirements.

Challenge

  • Development of a process capable of handling highly variable supplementary cementitious materials with different grinding characteristics.
  • Differences in grindability, density, moisture behavior, and particle size distribution of pozzolanic and latent hydraulic materials.
  • Maintaining stable product fineness while ensuring efficient operation across different material compositions.
  • High operational flexibility
  • Stable product quality
  • Efficient energy utilization
  • Reliable long-term operation
  • Integration into the customer’s production environment

Solution

  • Extensive laboratory and pilot scale grinding tests to evaluate the behavior of the different SCM materials under real process conditions.
  • The testing program focused on: Material characterization, Grindability evaluation, Separator optimization, Product fineness stability, Energy-efficient process design
  • CEMTEC tailored a customized grinding concept to the customer’s material portfolio and production targets based on the collected test data.

Sustainability Impact

The production of supplementary cementitious materials plays a key role in reducing the clinker factor and lowering CO₂ emissions in cement production.

By implementing an energy-efficient dry grinding solution optimized for SCM applications, the project supports more sustainable construction materials while maintaining the required technical product performance. Due to CEOPS real-time particle analysis, high-quality data helps cyment to optimise production and ensure both process and product stability. This reference project highlights how advanced grinding technology and tailored process engineering can contribute to both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in the cement industry.

Project Execution & Commissioning

CEMTEC managed the complete project realization, including engineering, equipment supply, installation support and commissioning.

During startup, the grinding circuit was optimized for different SCM materials. Separator settings, airflow and grinding parameters were fine-tuned to ensure stable operation and constant product quality.

The commissioning phase confirmed the successful implementation of the designed process concept and demonstrated the flexibility of the grinding system for different raw materials.
